Rifle Elk Hunts

Backcountry Guides and Outfitter opened in 1975 with two objectives: provide the big game hunter with a comfortable outdoor adventure and offer an excellent chance to harvest a bull in fair chase. To implement these objectives, hunts are full service and guided on a 38,000 acre ranch in northwest Colorado. This corner of the state has the largest concentration of Rocky Mt. elk in North America. Managing the elk herd on private land for 30+ years has created exceptional opportunites for our clients to see large groups of elk in a natural environment as well as to harvest a 5 to 6 point bull.

Our hunters have enjoyed 90%-100% success over the last decade. Knowing the unique resource Backcountry offers in terms of a beautiful setting and great hunting, most of our clients return to Backcountry season after season. The area of operations in game units 214 and 441 ranges from sloping to mountainous with aspen groves, black timber, meadows, an extensive network of roads and trails, and numerous ponds and wallows. Four by four vehicles access trailheads on various parts of the ranch.

Hunting from a blind or stalking are the proven successful methods; hunts are geared to physical ability. We are fortunate that our guides return year after year, and they work hard to make this the dream hunt of a lifetime. In addition to showing you elk, your guide field dresses, skins, takes to camp, prepares your elk for the processor in Steamboat where the processed animal is frozen and ready for you at the hunt's conclusion. Your guide is a hunting companion, sportsman and capable woodsman.

Archery

Archery elk hunts present challenging, sometimes hair-raising encounters for the hunter who finds himself "too close for comfort" with a bull in rut answering the guide's bugle at a galloping charge. Elk with a bow is one of the supreme tests of hunting skill in North America. Crisp September days, aspens turning yellow signal the breeding season for these magnificent animals. Shooting opportunities and success are outstanding on 5 and 6 point bulls from bugling or stand. Archery Hunts are full service, guided (1:1), and provided with everything you need except your elk license, bow and personal gear. To minimize noise and hunting pressure there are very small groups in each archery camp. Hunts are booked on a first come basis.

Camp

Our base of operations has been on the same site for 23 years and is refined into "Comfortable Camping" with a hot shower, generator for lighting, SAT. T.V. for major sporting events, and horseshoe pits. The camp is reached by gravel road so hunters can drive to their tents; no horseback and no gear limit. The lodge built in 1988 is the diningroom and kitchen. Four-14x16 wall tents adjacent the lodge have wooden floors, metal cots, mattresses and wood stoves. For Leisure time, Steamboat springs is an easy 45-minute drive and there is great fishing nearby.

In the lodge, three well-balanced nutritious meals are prepared and served daily by the same "exceptional" cook that has been with us for 21 years.

Hunters also enjoy the comfortable, rustic atmosphere of the lodge to reminisce with each other about old hunting stories, to tell all the details of the days successful hunt and to try their luck at winning a card game or two. The lodge also displays trophy mounts and pictures of all the memories throughout the years. Come join us for some relaxing quite time in the Rockies!

Muzzleloader

Muzzleloader hunts offer the same hair-raising, excitement packed days that archers experience during the rut in mid-September. Hunts are full service, guided, and provided with everything you need except your personal gear, elk license and primitive weapon. Hunters will experience firsthand the fall rituals of the bull elk, first hearing the screaming bugles before daylight, then seeing the herd bull nervously working and herding his harem away from challenging satellite bulls in a lush meadow and all within your shooting range.
